Alexander council asked to re-instate planning commission

During Monday night's monthly city council meeting aldermen will be asked to re-instate the City of Alexander Planning Commission. The only other item on the agenda is the appointment of new commission members.

The planning commission was dissolved during the April meeting with the option of re-establishing it at a later date. The five-member commission was established April 6, 2015. Since then two members have resigned and four of the five terms have expired without the mayor appointing anyone to fill those positions.

At the April meeting Mayor Paul Mitchell said the last planning commission meeting was held around April of 2016. He said planning commissions are required to meet once every quarter.

“They’ve gotten very little done,” Mitchell said. He wants to appoint, “People who are really interested.”

Mitchell pointed to one goal of the planning commission which has yet to be accomplished. Alexander still does not have an up-to-date zoning map.

This month's meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 19, 2017 at 6 PM in the city hall courtroom. The Alexander City Hall is located along Highway 111 across from the post office. The public is invited to attend.

    1. The council was presented with a concept design at a December, 2014 meeting. The planning commission was formed April 6, 2015 so I'm not sure how the planning commission gets credit. Maybe Michelle Hobbs being voted out as mayor had something to do with it. About not getting things done, we're still waiting for the temporarily adopted county subdivision rules to be converted to a city ordinance.

  4. Most communities don't publish a play-by-play of their progress. Most try things and if it works the community enjoys, if not they look for better ideas, but any winner doesn't depend on ego driven compliments to stoke the fires of progress. We, the public don't elect representatives to fight, whine and bicker over everything that doesn't suit us, as far as I can see, this administration has it going on. The town has never looked better. Yes, some yards need cleaned up, most likely yours as well (truth be known) I see code enforcement around everywhere, but they don't publish the names of the people they cite. Maybe that's something we need to look into. Publishing names and addresses of violators.
