Rod Chapman retires after nine years with Alexander Streets and Parks Department

Retiring after nine years doesn’t sound like a big deal, but when you’ve been with the Alexander Street and Parks Department for nine years it means you’ve been there longer than the department’s superintendent. In the case of Rod Chapman he was also the only department employee for his first two years.

During the city council’s March 15 meeting Mayor Paul Mitchell announced Chapman’s retirement, which became effective earlier this year. Mitchell reminisced about when he first became mayor in January 2011 Chapman was the only employee in the department.

In a back-and-forth conversation with the mayor about retirement Chapman said, “I’m getting to old.”

Mitchell presented Chapman with a Certificate of Appreciation and a Dedicated Service Award plaque for his service to the city.
