Alexander City Council declares vacancy in Ward-3

Ward-3 Alderman Dan Church's resignation from the Alexander City Council was accepted by the council and his seat declared vacant at the council's August 19 regular meeting. He submitted his hand-written letter of resignation to Mayor Michelle Hobbs on Thursday, July 18. The letter gave no reason for his resignation.

Anyone wishing to apply for the position may submit a resume to City Hall before the next regular meeting, which will be held Monday, September 16. You must be a registered voter and a resident of Ward-3. Ward-3 is highlighted in yellow on the map.

This was Church's first time serving on the council. Church was elected in November, 2012 defeating incumbent Harvey Howard.

This makes the third alderman to leave the council since November's election. The first was Ward-4 Alderman Henry Tackett, who was also elected for the first time during the November, 2012 election. He resigned for health reasons and died shortly after. The second was Ward-3 Alderman Jack Shoemaker, who resigned after moving out of the city.

  1. Well it looks like your town has lost another elected person, how many more will go before the state has to take your small town over and run it? Maybe until another legal election that would be the best answer , huh?

  2. Good!! He is gone. Now Juanita needs to go then all the XMayor Mitchell followers will be gone with their agendas. Now the City can get back to an open City Government and build for the future not try to bring the past forward.
It is hard for me to believe that some of you Juanitas followers have not had anything to say about the appointment of the Recorder.Did you not know that she resigned (I think in 1998) from the Recorder/Treasurer position after a Legislative Audit that pointed out some wrong doings with city funds she was doing. (Had to do with spending TAX money. Seems she does not know anything about how it is supposed to be spent now either. She did not put this fact on her resume. I am sure some of the "YES" votes would have been a big "NO" if she had put it on ther.

  3. Bill, you are narrow-minded in my opinion. Why say ‘good’ because Dan is gone. Why bad-mouth Juanita. Frankly, if all aldermen were as passionate and active about their responsibilities as aldermen as Juanita is, this town would be noted for being well represented. But then maybe you have never been well represented before. However it remains that your ability to reason and comprehend thought seems to be very retarded. That is retarded, as in sophomoric.
People have a right to their opinion. You certainly don’t hesitate to share yours, but condemn others who do the same. The city is not going forward, nor will they with the present administration, in my opinion. However I understand what I might call ‘going forward’ others will not. I will stand firm on the fact that a town the size of ours cannot afford a new car for every city employee, not even for the ‘chosen’ ones.
I really like the clean-up momentum; but see the TURN IN YOUR NEIGHBORS as stupidly dangerous, inviting hostility and trouble.
As for Paul, when did he misuse his position? He has friends, and he, as the rest of us, you included, know those who are not friends. I would hate to think we have enemies, political only maybe – surely not personal.
I appreciate that you have introduced a new ‘string’ here in the person of the recorder. Not being native to Alexander, I have to say, I don’t know anything about her. I just know that if anyone is connected to anyone in the previous administration, Michelle doesn’t allow them near her playground. If you don’t like the recorder, how did she get appointed? Why is she seated?
Looks like the previous administration was right in their opinion last election season about the Johnson administration coming back, if what you say is true.

    1. Louella,
Such a big word SOPHOMORIC you use. You probably were not educated in ARKANSAS as I have read some on here are described. You might think I fit the description of being conceited and overconfident of knowledge but I am not. I can usually put fact behind what I write. I always make sure I have the facts to back up what I write. Unlike some on here who are blinded by the X Mayor Mitchell, Church, Shoemaker, Juanita agendas.
The 7 new Cars have not been purchased as of now. Juanita should have heard this at the last meeting. She should have brought you up to date.
As far as the appointment of the Recorder, I did not have a vote. She needs to say why she did not put this FACT on her resume. It wouldn't make any difference now. But she needs to tell the fact in public comment. I did not say I did not like her. She just needs to explain the sudden resignation that happened when she was serving the position in my opinion. It would stop the speculation. As for the clean up. We all need to join in and support the effort. The clean up starts in our own yards. When you submit addresses you do not have to identify who you are. I do because I want my neighbors to know who I am. I am not afraid of them. This will start with alot of the drugies leaving our city. Being afraid is no way to live and to protect property values.

    2. Trust me, clean yards and druggies leaving have no connection. One will have no bearing on the other. Except, turn in a druggy for a messy yard, you might inherit more than a clean yard. Like maybe a well tended plot.
I still contend you get further by example, (you're roght, your own yard) by showing the kindness of helping those who can't help themselves - vs - turning them in. Many in Alexander are very needy, aged, infirmed, just unable to have a neat tidy yard. They do good just to get it mowed. Fortunately we are country,
The only 'big' in Alexander are some egos.
When Regina was stirring up Project Alexander many people put things on the side of the street, hoping for help, they didn't get it. But Regina had the right idea. She was making progress until she was shot down. But that is the way it goes in Alexander. (With some, not all. Please don't take this as a blanket indictment, there are very good people in Alexander.)

  4. Louella,
As usual, in my opinion you are "RADIOING" when you don't have a clue about what is going on with the clean up.
Most of the places that are in violation of Local, State and Federal Laws belong to SLUM LORDS. It is hard to wade through beer cans, drug needles, piles of human waste and garbage and fight off pit bulls to help clean these places up. Besides these residents want to hide behind
the junk. Several of the drug houses don't even have utilities hooked up.
I do not turn in the people who have trouble keeping a "Neat and Tidy Yard". I offer to help them. It is the places with multiple junk cars, piles of rat infested garbage, weeds taller that these junk vehicles and junk furniture that are turned in.
There is a difference in being "COUNTRY" and being "JUNKIE".
My ancestors were considered "COUNTRY" but they kept their places
clean and junk/garbage free. Most of the citizens of Alexander live in Mobile Homes but this doesn't mean they have to be "TRAILER TRASH".
As for Regina's efforts on the clean up. I saw lots of junk items picked up and brought to the "PIT" for the clean up. Can't remember the total tonage that was cleaned and disposed of free to the residents. Thanks to the Saline Solid Waste District Board for their efforts and paying the nearly $4000 for our clean up effort. You praise Regina but she and her parents are considered "SLUM LORDS" in my opinion. They have left their old property in South Alexander junked up. The burned out structure is a safety hazard.
She was only "SHOT DOWN" with the City Funding the project. She wanted to spend the requested money on a "COOK OUT" for the Fire Dept. The Saline County Solid Waste District furnished the manpower, containers, and landfill expense for the project. The District still has this program. All it takes is interested Citizens to organize the clean up efforts. No cost to the citizens is involved just volunteers. The City of Bauxite just got a Grant from the District to have a weekly City sponsored clean up. It is a joint effort between City Government and Churches with the District furnishing the Disposal at no cost.
    More later,

  5. Bill, that is very interesting and some very good points. HOWEVER, the sites you are noting don’t need reported. They are all over town; are very obvious; they break the law by the existence of the conditions you mention; further they have been around a long time with the same results. Nothing!
So what is the point of reporting?
You can say it is intended for the extreme cases, but the fact is, the letter I read that calls for complaining, is all inclusive. It is not limited to extreme cases. As a result, one person with an axe to grind can make another person’s life miserable with the slightest infraction, like an un-mowed yard.
The point on Regina isn’t personal, it was concept. I said she had the right idea, but was shot down for her own needs, and it was for her own yard, not the cook-out. The cook-out was not a fire department event; it was a city/citizen event.
Credit for what WAS done is duly noted, but I personally drove through Alexander and saw where people had put things out, they had been promised it would be; it was not.
I am for the effort to get things cleaned up; I stand by my conviction that turning in your neighbors is not a good thing.
I have posted in another place on this blog-site a simple description of a positive effort in the form of “APPLE & ONION.” No point in repeating it and whether or not it is noted, there has to be positive process, I don’t think we are there yet.
